History and Origin

The Rhodesian Ridgeback ( also known as African Lion Hound) is a large hunting dog originated from South Africa. From 1650 years the Europeans emigrants to Rhodesia (which is now Zimbabwe) had been crossed European dogs with South Africa native ridged dogs to get a perfect dog to able to hunt, to herd,to protect property and to be easy to groom and keep. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was the result that licked all creation. These dogs are particularly known to be good lion hunters but they also excel at smaller game retrieving, are good watchdogs and companions. First standard for the Rhodesian Ridgeback was written in 1922 by Francis Richard Barnes, who contributed in a lot in breeding the present Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Temperament and Personality

Rhodesian Ridgebacks possessed a considerable stamina, speed and need a lot of exercise. Can be excellent jogging companions. They are very intelligent, affectionate and make a great family pet. Can be sometimes stubborn. Need obedience training. Have very few health problems.

Size and Appearance

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a large-sized short-coated dogs, handsome and muscular with strong tapered tail.They have a unique exterior due to the ridge on the back, formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. The colours range from light wheaten to red wheaten sometimes with small white markings on the chest and feet.
Height is 24 - 27 inch, weight: 65 - 85 lbs.


Need occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush or wiping with cloths.
Lifespan is 11 years.
The breed is recognized by CKC, FCI, AKC, KCGB, CKC, ANKC, NKC, NZKC, RRCUSI
