History and Origin

The Pomeranian descended from the sled dogs of Iceland and Lapland. Some of these dogs were brought to Germany where were used to herd livestock. The country area where they were popular was called Pomeranian and the breed was named after it. Later the Pomeranian overspread to other European countries and became popular with the monarchs, namely George III, Queen Victoria, Marie Antoinette. Originally Pomeranians were large-size dogs, but as they changing their walk to notables' pets, the gradual down sizing breeding was started. Now the Pomeranian is a toy dog with weight ranging from 3 to 7 pounds.

Temperament and Personality

A Pomeranian is a very lively and bright dog. Despite its toy size it may be stubborn and bold, so obedience training should not be neglected. These dog are alert, they have preserved excellent watchdog ability. They are loyal to the owner and watchful to others. Pomeranians make an excellent show dog. Being easy to learn and make tricks they are noted as superior circus performers.

Size and Appearance

The Pomeranian is a small, compact dog with short neck and very long, double coat. The weight ranges from three to seven pounds, the ideal weight for the show dog being 4 to 6 pounds. The height ranges from seven to twelve inches. Pomeranians go in a number of colors, most are red, white, orange, cream, brown, black, blue, some are pattern colored.


The Pomeranian fluffy beauty costs daily brushing. The eyes need cleaning. Pomeranians are prone to tooth disease so dental checkup and care are essential. This breed is a constant shedder. Pomeranians don't need much exercise. The Life span is about 13 years.
