Main Coon
History and Origin
The Main Coon is America's oldest natural longhaired breed. It originates in the state of Maine. Supposedly it is a result of a union between a domestic short hair cat and a racoon. The Main Coon was first recorded in cat literature in 1861. These cats were competitors on the early cat shows in New York. The Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association was formed In 1968. It is one of the most popular breeds in USA now.
Size and Appearance
The Main Coon is adapted to wild living in a harsh climate. The body is muscular and rather big.
Female weighs between 9-12 pounds and males is in the 13 to 18 pound range.
The coat is heavy and water-resistant. Maine Coons come in a wide variety of tabby and solid colors.
Temperament and Personality
Main Coons are fond of human company but they are never obtrusive. They possess easy-going personality. The Main Coon's voice is a distinctively low and sweet.
Care
À weekly combing is all that is usually required.
